When my son was an infant, we were introduced to the California Baby line of bath products. I had read about SLS and other chemicals in common baby products including the tear-free and “gentle” products that are found in your neighborhood drugstore. My son is now seven and we are still using California Baby.
I am going to list my favorite California Baby products as well as the Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database rating. The safety rating scale is as follows: 0-2 = low hazard, 3-6 = moderate hazard, 7-10 = high hazard
California Baby Must Haves
California Baby Bubble Bath – Calming & Super Sensitive
The calming bubble bath has received a score of 2 by Skin Deep, a product of the Environmental Working Group. The super sensitive bubble bath also has a score of two. This is a scent-free bubble bath that is great for a child with allergies or sensitivities. For comparison, the original Johnson & Johnson bubble bath has a score of 5.
California Baby Bug Repellent – Spray & Lotion
Both of the bug repellent products have a Skin Deep score of 2. I don’t live in an area where mosquitos and bugs are a major problem but we’ve used the repellents during camping and it has worked really well. For comparison, Avon’s Skin So Soft Bug Repellent/Sunscreen has a score of 5.
California Baby Diaper Area Wash
We loved this spray-on diaper area wash and used it daily to help prevent diaper rash. It has a score of 1. I don’t know of a comparable product.
California Baby Hair Conditioner – Calming
My daughter has super-fine and easily tangled hair. The condition has a Skin Deep score of 2. For comparison, the Johnson and Johnson No More Tangles Easy-Comb Conditioner has a Skin Deep score of 7.
California Baby Moisturizing Sunscreen No Fragrance SPF 18
I live in Arizona and have to fair-skinned children. I can’t stand using sunscreen and avoid it at all costs. However, it is unavoidable at times so we use the California Baby sunscreen. With a Skin Deep score of 2, it is far better than a drugstore brand of baby sunscreen which comes in with a score of 7 (Rite Aid, CVS & Walgreen’s).
California Baby Shampoo & Body Wash – Calming
We buy this by the jug. This is our soap and shampoo and comes with a safety rating of 2. The Baby Magic Gentle Baby shampoo has a score of 7.
