Back to Basics Cleaning – Baking Soda and Vinegar

Although companies like S.C. Johnson are going after lovers of nontoxic cleaning products with their Nature’s Source cleaning line, there are products out there that are even better for the environment. Many households across the United States are turning to the back to basics cleaning products of baking soda and vinegar.

This “green” and cheap combination has particularly gained popularity now. Americans spent more than $7.3 billion on household cleaning products in 2007, according to market research. In a down economy, consumers are looking for less-expensive alternatives.

A gallon of distilled white vinegar costs less than $4. A box of baking soda about $1.25. A gallon of all-purpose cleaner such as Clorox Formula 409 retails for $17.

I’ve done the baking soda and vinegar “thing” and it worked really well. Unfortunately, I can barely tolerate the smell of vinegar so my foray into back to basics cleaning didn’t last too long.
