When my son was born in 2001, I don’t recall there being an organic clothing line that was widely available. I’m sure there were niche markets here and there, but at the time, I lived in Little Rock, Arkansas. No slight to the area, as it is beautiful, but it isn’t exactly the hotbed of eco-friendly clothing companies.
Fast-forward to today and there are many organic clothing companies as well as many mainstream clothing companies that make organic products. My husband has a 100% organic cotton Quicksilver t-shirt and my daughter has some organic cotton pajamas that I purchased at Kohl’s.
One new company that is in the organic clothing and toy business is Fair Indigo. According to a March 2009 press release about the company, “Fair Indigo is a new clothing and toy company with a different way of doing business. They create stylish, high-quality products, many of them organic or eco-friendly, while paying a fair and meaningful living wage to the people who produce them. It’s a concept known as “fair trade” and it means putting people first.”
This sounds like my kind of company. Unfortunately, most of their clothes top out at size 12-18 months. They do have some larger sizes available for those fun “Big Brother” or “Big Sister” shirts, but the Raising Them Green family is complete so no new baby announcements in our future.
Although I can’t have fun with these cute organic (and in many cases dye-free) products, I can share them with you, the readers of Raising Them Green.
For more information on the company’s baby and toy products, visit the Fair Indigo website.
