Green America Adds Pharmaceutical Company Ratings

by Melissa on May 12, 2009

Green America, formerly Co-op America, was founded in 1982 way before the environmental movement became as popular as it is today. The company changed their name as of January 1, 2009 and the new name encompasses the organization’s goals more clearly (in my opinion). One of the sections of the Green America website is a watchdog section; the site ranks companies in a variety of bigpharmaindustries on their performance in the following areas: environment, human rights, labor, ethics & governance, and health & safety.

Green America uses a letter grading scale A, B, C, D, and F with A being the worst and of course F being the worst. Additionally, the organization will use the n/i symbol when they do not have enough information to make a call on the companies commitment in a specific area.

Green America assessed the following pharmaceutical companies (listed from highest ranked to lowest ranked) – Novartis, GlaxoSmithKline, Merck, Abbot, Pfizer, Bayer, and Sanofi Aventis. In the environment section, three companies received a C grade, one received a C-, one received a D grade, and two are listed as n/i.

For the full scoring chart, head on over to Green America.
