Dioxin May Impact Breastfeeding

by Melissa on June 14, 2009

I am definitely a proponent of the “Breast is best” statement – our bodies are meant to create the perfect food for our babies (and toddlers!). However, I know dioxin may impact breastfeedingfirst-hand the struggles that women go through when they have difficulties producing breast milk. I had oversupply issues with one and severe undersupply issues with the other. One new study links dioxin to a lack of new breast tissue growth during pregnancy and ultimately, to supply issues upon the birth of the child.

“The laboratory study of mice, conducted by the University of Rochester Medical Center and published in Toxicological Sciences, showed that “dioxin has a profound effect on breast tissue by causing mammary cells to stop their natural cycle of proliferation as early as six days into pregnancy, and lasting through mid-pregnancy.” Source: The Daily Green

Dioxins are commonly found in beef and dairy products. However, since the toxin is typically stored in the fat, lean meats and fat-free dairy products may provide a measure of protection against dioxin-induced inhibited breast growth.
