I know that not every parent carries around an iPhone, heck I know of many who are mobile phone free. However, if you have an iPhone, these are my top five iPhone apps for green parents.
GoodGuide – I’ve blogged about GoodGuide here before, but I have to add it to my top five picks. The application let’s you instantly check the ingredients of 75,000 household products. As you browse the aisles in the grocery store, forget about deciphering the labels (read How Organic are Your Organics?) and punch the product name into the app to get an easy to read summary of the product’s health, environmental, and social scores.
Dirty Produce – This iPhone app is a project of the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and provides you with information on the dirty dozen, the clean 15 and nearly 50 fruits and veggies.
iRecycle by Earth911.com – The folks behind the Earth911.com website have created their very own iPhone application. iRecycle allows you to search more than 100,000 recycling and disposal locations across the country. You can search for the nearest location, find out if the material you want to recycle is accepted at that location, and even call the center directly from the app.
ECOcal – This application uses a beautiful visual calendar to track natural phenomena including moon phases, meteor showers, seasonal constellations, and information about the flora and fauna here on Earth. This is a really unique app and something that my 7 year-old thoroughly enjoys.
Get Green – Get Green is one of the better green tip of the day apps. This is especially useful for parents just getting started on their green family journeys.
If you have an iPhone, what’s your favorite green app? How about applications for non-iPhone platforms?
