Three Products to Start You on Your “Go Green” Journey

The “go green” parenting movement is filled with parents that are second generation greenies and those that are just now thinking about making some eco-friendly changes in their household. Although getting started on your own go green journey may sound like a daunting task, it is really quite simple. You can get started on your next trip to the grocery store by replacing these three personal care/household products with more environmentally friendly choices.

  • Baby bath products – This is how I got started on my eco-friendly living journey. Today, it is easy to replace your baby or child’s bath product as green choices are available at many local retail shops. If you have a Whole Foods, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s or other market in your area, check there first. Personally, I love the California Baby products. However, if you want to do your own research, I recommend checking out the Skin Deep Cosmetics Database.
  • Laundry detergent – Traditional laundry detergent is nasty stuff. Some people swear by baking soda and vinegar but I have a strong aversion to the smell of vinegar so I haven’t, personally, tried it. However, one product that is making news lately is Maggie’s Soap Nuts. Soap Nuts even work in the new HE washing machines.
  • Dish soap – There are dozens of eco-friendly dish soap products on the market. I love Mrs. Meyers products. I’ve been using them for years and continue to do so – I love the smell and the product does a great job getting the dishes clean. I just checked the Mrs. Meyers website and they are offering a free dish soap with any $25+ purchase (through 7/5/09).

If you’re already past the getting started stage, I’d love to hear what steps you took first (product-wise). Leave a comment below with your recommendations.

I also recommend Grab Green. It’s easy to use, eco-friendly, and all natural. It comes in tiny pre-measured packs that dissolve even in cold water. Hard to get over the fact that all these years I had been overusing the detergent so I’m definitely saving $ and also being more efficient and green! You can find this on their website at http://www.grabgreenhome.com
