Low Carbon, Room Temperature Ice Cream Being Developed

by Melissa on August 25, 2009

When I saw the title of this article, my first reaction was “Huh?” The article, which appears in the Times Online, is titled “Unilever wants ice cream to ease global warming.” There were so many ways that the article could go, based on the title, so it warranted an immediate click icecreamthrough on my part. After reading it, the article can be summed up as a piece about low carbon, room temperature ice cream being developed.

Yes, that’s right, room temperature “ice” cream. Unilever, which owns Ben & Jerry’s, is working on creating an ice cream that does not need to be frozen at the factory or on the store’s shelves. Instead, the consumer will freeze the ice cream once they get home from the store.

I am neither a chemist nor a materials scientist but when I heard about this, I immediately thought “chemicals”. I wonder if there is an organic way to create room temperature ice cream?
