Last week was the first week of school and this year was our first year focusing on waste free school lunches. This is also my daughter’s first year taking her lunch to school as she just started Kindergarten. I’m happy to say that after three days of school (school started on Wednesday), all of our lunch supplies have survived and nothing has been inadvertently thrown away.
Each of the kids has a reusable Built NY lunch bag, reusable sandwich and snack bags from snackTAXI, reusable containers from Laptop Lunches, and a Klean Kanteen reusable water bottle with Built NY slinger. At first, I was just going to use the reusable bags but they don’t work well for dips or sauces so I ordered the containers that go into the Laptop Lunch box. Alexander used a Laptop Lunch in Kindergarten and it didn’t work as well as I’d hoped, for our needs, so we went with the loosely structured bag for this year.
I have to say that I was a bit nervous sending the kids with the pricey products but thankfully they’ve all made it home. Although the upfront costs are more than buying a box of 50 ziplock bags, the return on investment will likely be realized before the products wear out. However, my primary purpose in switching to waste free school lunches is to benefit my children’s health.
