A few weeks ago, we received the new CD from They Might Be Giants – Here Comes Science. After listening to it for several weeks, I have to say that it is honestly our favorite kids-themed CD. Alexander is working on a review of the DVD but I wanted to post a Raising Them Green review of the CD.
Ava
Ava’s favorite song, hands-down, is Roy G. Biv. I’m glad that she enjoys this song because up until the kids received the TMBG CD, they thought I was joking about ROYGBIV being the colors of the rainbow. I’d like to take this time to thank the band members for including this song on their CD, my kids now think I’m super cool for knowing something that They Might Be Giants knows, as well.
Her next favorite song is My Brother the Ape. At five, I’m not sure that she really gets the song but she does understand that it talks about a brother being an ape. At five, with an older brother, that is hilarious!
Alexander
Every time Alexander hears the Electric Car song, he asks me when we’re going to buy one. I’ve repeatedly reminded him that the only 100% electric car on the market (that isn’t a neighborhood vehicle) is the Tesla Roadster and there are a few problems with that: 1) the $120k+ pricetag and b) the fact that it is a two-seater. He is holding out hope that the Tesla Model S sedan will find its way to our garage soon (I’m with him on this one).
Alexander is eight now and most “kids” CDs are just beneath him. Basically, he would never admit that he liked it no matter how much he enjoyed the music. However, he really enjoys Here Comes Science and has actually requested guitar lessons so that he can be in a science band.
Mommy
After listening to a Disney Playhouse CD for six solid months when Alexander was two, I vowed to never listen to another kids CD again. However, They Might Be Giants is beyond just a “kids” band – they are a fantastic group with wonderful music. It just so happens that they make “kids” music. I am glad to have this CD in the car and love the fact that my kids think I’m uber-cool because John Flansburgh emailed me.
Keep checking back as I get Alexander in front of the video camera for a video review of the DVD.

My kids have moved on to the music that my husband I like so we don’t have the problem of finding music for them that we like, too. When they were younger, one of my favorite CD’s was For the Kids (various artists). You might want to check that out, too.
As a biologist, I’m thrilled that this CD is introducing kids to science and making it cool! For too long we’ve pooh-poohed the important role that science and scientists play in our future and well-being. Thank your for sharing your take on the music. I’m thrilled that your children enjoy it as well.
Love your review! I wish I knew the Roy G. Biv song, the way I remember the colors of the rainbow is a Barney song… not cool!
