A New Year’s Day Hike in the Superstition Mountains

by Melissa on January 4, 2010

I rang in the New Year with a nasty sinus infection but my dad took the kids out for a New Year’s Day hike in the beautiful Superstition Mountains. My dad is a member of a local search and rescue team and has been a part of many rescues in the Superstitions. He has been hiking these mountains longer than I’ve been alive and has instilled a love for the outdoors in my children. Check out my post Fun Fauna Night in the Desert for a recap of a recent visit with toads and tarantulas.

One thing I love about my dad taking the kids out on a hike is that he always takes his camera. Enjoy these pictures!

Looks like they had some wonderful playoutdoors time. How great to have a dad who is an expert on being out in the mountains. Here in Kansas the weather is a whole lot different – I’m just wondering when we’ll be out from under the snow!

I love that boys always grab a stick when they are walking.

Your kids look like they had a great time on their hike with your dad. Hiking is a wonderful way to get the kids outdoors. Our latest hikes have been in the snow. Spotted some wonderful snow people on our latest hike in the forest: http://www.marghanita.com/magic-in-the-forest/

Alex had a great time with navigation practice. I took them off trail and he had to find our way back. He did great. Ava got to lead on the way out and kept trying to lead on the way back, after we got back to the trail. love them brats.

Thanks “Pops” – Alex definitely has his mommy’s sense of direction…looks like Ava inherited daddy’s. =P
